Workshop Program ASM's Professional Development Committee has organized 13 workshops preceding the 50th ICAAC, to be held on Saturday, September 11. All scheduled days and times have been noted in the description.
Workshops frequently sell out. On-site registration will NOT be available for sessions that reach capacity and close before the 50th ICAAC. Updates on closed workshops will be published on this site.
Conversely, a minimum of 20 attendees is required to hold a workshop. If the minimum is not met, ASM reserves the right to cancel a workshop.
Workshop Format Workshops should include active participation and interaction with the audience. Examples of some teaching approaches that encourage audience participation are: discussion groups, case histories/presentations, role-playing and laboratory activities.
Lunch will be provided to all full-day workshop participants. A ticket will be given to participants with instructions on the day of the workshop.
Workshop Location You will need to arrive at your designated room 30 - 45 minutes prior to the start of your workshop to ensure the room setup, equipment needs and handouts are satisfactory and ready for the start of your workshop. Your workshop room assignment will be sent to you in late September, and be available on the website following that.
All workshops will be held at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel, 4 25 Summer Street(one of ICAAC's Headquarters Hotels).
Audiovisual Equipment ASM provides an LCD projector, computer, screen and a podium microphone as standard equipment in each workshop room.
Tips for Powerpoint Presentations Limit each frame to one main idea to keep it simple and easy to read. Text should be captured in the handout. Participants should not have to read the screen. Photos, graphs, and charts should be used to enhance or complement your presentation, but must be readable. If you do use text to emphasize certain key elements, the print/font should be large enough so that it can be read from the back of a large room.
Handout Materials Meeting staff reproduces and delivers all handout materials to the meeting site in support of all workshops. Sufficient copies will be made for each participant, convener and faculty.
Faculty are expected to produce camera ready material for their individual presentation and send ONLY electronic files directly to the convener. Copies from individual faculty members will not be accepted by ASM. All materials are due to the convener no later than July 31. He/she will then group and order the files and submit them directly to ASM no later than August 7. Handout should be formatted as indicated below. Because of the time required to print, bind and ship workshop books to the meeting site, material must be received at ASM by August 7. Faculty who do not meet the deadlines are responsible for reproducing and hand carrying their materials to the meeting. ASM will not reimburse for related expenses.
Please include with your handouts, on a separate page titled Workshop Objectives, in bulleted format, the overall objectives of this workshop. This will be included in the handouts for your workshop participants. On a separate page please also include the Workshop Schedule (who, what, when).
To insure uniformity with all workshop handouts, please follow the guidelines below:
- All handouts MUST be submitted as electronic files.
- Margins should be 1" on both long sides of an 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper.
- Use font type Arial or Helvetica and a font size no smaller than 10 point.
- All presentation files must be in Power Point (.ppt) format.
- All other handouts should be in MS Word; consult with ASM if an exception is needed.
- Majority of the handouts will be reproduced in black and white. However, if there are slides where the understanding is dependent on color (i.e., certain graphs, tables, images), color print may be used. In this case, please include a memo indicating which pages/slides for which you are requesting need color printing. If this memo is not sent to the convener with the slides we will assume black and white printing is acceptable.
- Cover sheets should introduce each section of the handout. It may be as simple as a title and presenter name.
- Please number all pages using the initials of the presenter with the number; For example, if Judy Dalie is presenting, the pages for a handout would be marked as JD1, JD2, etc. each section can be numbered independently.
- If you have scanned pages from a book or publication, please remove all borders and dead space. You should enlarge the material so that it covers the full page. The origin publication of the page copied should be cited.
Program Evaluations and Needs Assessments Each workshop participant must visit E-central or go online two weeks after the meeting to complete the workshop evaluation and receive a Statement of Credit. ASM uses this information to help maintain the quality and integrity of these programs, and to learn how successful the workshop was in meeting the stated objectives and participant goals.
Continuing Education Accreditation
Physicians and Microbiologists The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The American Society for Microbiology takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity. ASM designates full-day workshops for a maximum of 7 and half-day workshops for a maximum of 3.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Each physician should claim credit commensurate with their level of participation in the activity.
The American Medical Association (AMA) has determined that physicians not licensed in the U.S. who participate in this CME activity are eligible for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.
Diplomates of the American Board of Medical Microbiology, Diplomates of the American Board of Medical Laboratory Immunology, and Registrants of the National Registry of Microbiologists may earn AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM towards re-certification. Each physician should claim credit commensurate with their level of participation in the activity.
Pharmacists: The American Society for Microbiology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. ASM will award continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit for participation in select 50th ICAAC Pre-Conference workshops. Current workshops already approved for (CPE) credit will have a corresponding Universal Activity Number (UAN) next to the session title. Statements of Credit will indicate credits based on participation. ASM complies with the ACPE Standards for Continuing Pharmacy Education.
California Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS): ASM is accredited by the California Department of Health Services to provide continuing education for California Clinical Laboratory Scientists. All workshops designated for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM will also qualify for California CE credits toward CLS licence renewal.
Florida Clinical Laboratory Personnel: ASM is accredited by the Florida Department of Health to offer continuing education for Florida Clinical Laboratory Personnel. Workshops that offer Florida CE contact hours will be indicated in the individual workshop details.
To complete your California and Florida requirements, please be sure to provide your signature on the rosters in the workshop rooms; you will need to fill out a workshop evaluation form as well.
Travel Arrangements All faculty are responsible for their own airline and hotel arrangements. As faculty, you do not pay a Workshop Registration Fee. However, if you intend to participate in the 50th ICAAC Meeting, you will need to register.
In order to reserve a hotel room, please call Experient at (800) 974-3621 and speak to a staff member to complete your hotel registration and 50th ICAAC registration, if applicable. You may also do this online by visiting the registration page and following the registration and housing links. It is strongly suggested that you reserve your hotel room at the earliest possible date, as hotel blocks fill quickly.
Travel Subsidy Faculty will be compensated for actual expenses up to a set amount established by the workshop convener and approved by the PDC. The PDC has set a total faculty budget for half-day workshops at $1500, full day workshops at $3000 and an individual limit of $750 per day.
